Yulian Semyonov - the unrivalled master of the political detective genre, the father of the legendary Schtirlitz (soviet James Bond), founder of the newspaper «Soverchenno sekretno» ("Top Secret") and one of the most published authors of the Soviet Union - left behind a host of mysteries. Despite his open nature and cheerful disposition, few of even those whom he considered friends could say that they knew everything about him.

Semyonov' final novel about the beloved Schtirlitz is called «Despair». It was written in the glasnost era, but it has remained until now the author's most mysterious book. For it was in this book that Yulian Semyonov tried to reveal all the most cryptic details - everything about which he had been forced to remain silent for 25 years.
